To celebrate St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday in April a weekend of events is taking placed place in Hoddesdon around the theme of local history and heritage. The programme is being co-ordinated by Broxbourne Arts Forum (BArts) in partnership Books @ Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS), Hoddesdon Library and The Lowewood Museum. The programme includes:
BORED BY THE BARD – a Let’s Do Lunch event at Broxbourne Civic Hall presented by BArts at 12 noon Friday 23rd April. An entertainment of music, poetry and famous works from our best known playwright and poet enjoyed with a glass of wine and lunch. Tickets £10.50 from Box Office: 01992 441946
Lowewood Museum will be open on Saturday & Sunday from 10am – 4pm with a special exhibition WHO LIVED IN A HOUSE LIKE THIS? organised by the Friends of Lowewood Museum highlighting the history of selected historic buildings in the town and the people who have lived in them. Entry to the museum is free. Famlies are invited to take part in a HERITAGE COMPETITION based on buildings featured on the Hoddesdon Heritage Trail. Quiz sheets and the Heritage Trail leaflets will be available from the Museum reception over the weekend and must be returned there by 4pm on Sunday. The winning family will receive a museum heritage booklet.
There will be three free showings of the HODDESDON NEWSREEL at Mayhem Theatre Arts in Brewery Road on Saturday 25th at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm to showcase the wonderful black and white films shot by local resident Tom Franklin from the late1940s through to the early 1960s.
On Saturday 24th April Hoddesdon Library will be promoting the MAKING MEMORIES PROJECT - an exciting new community website which was launched in January. Local people are being invited to share their memories of Broxbourne and the surrounding area by contributing experiences, stories, photographs and audio and visual clips to an interactive online archive at www.hertsmemories.org.uk
Over the weekend Books @ Hoddesdon in partnership with Hertfordshire Archives and The Mercury will launch a HODDESDON HERITAGE COMPETITION inviting local residents to submit a 750 word article either about one of their ancestors who lived locally, or about the history of their house. The winning entries chosen will be featured on the Herts Memories website and in The Mercury, with their authors receiving signed copies of Nick Barratt’s GUIDE TO YOUR ANCESTOR’S LIVES and THE "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?" ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GENEALOGY. These prizes are funded by The Rotary Club of Hoddesdon.
