Hertford: A History
Jacqueline Cooper

HB £15.99 (Phillimore 2007)

This new book, featuring over 100 illustrations, is the first comprehensive history of Hertfordshire’s County town for more than 30 years. The book provides a fascinating insight into the long and eventful history of the town from its earliest beginnings as a major river ford, through  the period where it served as a military stronghold and later a royal residence, to mixed fortunes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This account includes material covering not only the lives of the wealthy but also many inhabitants who were not so privileged especially during the 18th and 19th centuries.

HODDESDON - A History by Sue Garside; Hardback £15.99
(Phillimore 2002)

This is the only book charting the full history of Hoddesdon, a Hertfordshire market town whose roots can be traced back to the Neolithic settlements around the Lea Valley. From a collection of landholdings listed in the Domesday Book over the next two centuries Hoddesdon grew into a thriving community. Inns and chapels were built to capitalise on the town's position on a main road out of London.

In the late seventeenth century a plot to assassinate Charles II was unearthed at nearby Rye House. In the 18th and 19th century Hoddesdon became a major centre of the brewing industry and has been described as "the cradle of the malting industry in England".

HODDESDON'S PAST IN PICTURES by David Dent; Hardback £14.95
(Rockingham Press 1992)

This book uses the extensive private black and white photographic collections, many of which have never been published before, compiled by local historian David Dent to celebrate the past glories of Hoddesdon and to illustrate the drastic changes this historic market town has undergone in the last hundred and fifty years.

It features nostalgic pictures of the numerous buildings of historical and architectural importance which were demolished in the mid twentieth century to make way for new roads and shopping precincts in a frenzy of urban development. There are also plenty of examples of once cherished local shops and business including Christie's Brewery and the many market gardens and nurseries which prospered on the outskirts of the town. This is one of a series of hardback books by publisher David Perman of the Rockingham Press based in Ware which uses old photographic collections to illustrate the history and developments of local county towns.
